More than 94% of the Surinamese population can read and write. Education is compulsory for children from 7 to 12 years of age. Kindergarten is not compulsory, but is well attended. The process starts from primary school to secondary education and career- oriented training. The average school day starts at 7:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm. In addition to standard education, there are a number of private schools that work in accordance with international guidelines. Would you like to continue your education?
You can study at the Anton de Kom University in Paramaribo or at one of the number of training institutes. It is worth mentioning that they have a varied program and their training courses are often recognised. Please contact the Minister of Education and Community Development for more information.
